Roast aubergine, apricot chutney, feta & pine nuts
Having been living in Dalry, 5 minutes from Haymarket train station, for 6 months now I am embarrassed to say that I walk past its array of tempting taste spots everyday but haven’t sampled them! However tonight was the night and I set out to visit First Coast.
I’d always thought that First Coast was a dedicated seafood restaurant as I thought coast was a dead giveaway! As someone who is trying to forge a love for seafood I was up for the challenge however I was pleasantly surprised to find the menu did indeed include seafood but there was so much more on there in the way of pork belly, duck, pasta, steak and pumpkin and cous cous stew – something for everyone.
Linguine, courgettes, roast garlic, chilli & lemon
Tonight was a catch up with my Yorkshire fellow home economics teacher friend. We used to work together up in Aberdeenshire so it was so lovely to catch up over some delicious well presented food. We both chose the roast aubergine starter which had so many tangy nutty undertones. My friend stuck with the veggie theme and opted for the linguine which I managed to steal a wee taste of, it was bursting in citrus refreshing flavours that could transport you to a hot sunny climate on a cold winters night in Edinburgh.
Sri Lankan Ling curry, jasmine rice
My boyfriend loves fish and he had the Sri Lankan Ling curry (Ling is a type of cod) with jasmine rice, truth be told he could have chosen anything on the menu because he’s such a good eater open to trying most things. He commented that his main was so light and flavoursome, he managed to pick at my main that I found too filling in then end.
My main – flat iron steak with chipotle butter, tomato & red onion salad & chunky chips
There is no other way to describe my main other than hefty good, spicy, tender, juicy and filling . The server recommended that it should be cooked medium rare and I’m usually a medium well customer. However I was not disappointed, I couldn’t get over the melt in your mouth consistency of my steak, it was simply perfection on a plate.
To conclude, I’ve been missing out on a 2minute walk from some of Edinburgh’s tastiest fair, I won’t be making that mistake again, question is which of Dalry’s restaurants is next? If I’m certain of anything though, it won’t be long before I’m back trying more of First Coast’s incredible offerings.
