On a recommendation from a local taxi driver I headed to Union Street to be met with new local brunch spot ‘The Cannon.’

The Cannon felt immediately welcoming, smiley, helpful staff. I was seated at the pretty window with a grassy floral wall. I was offered the breakfast and brunch menu which normally I’d be all over as I am slightly obsessed by poached eggs, but after 2 coffees I was in the mood for lunch. Not a bother at all to my friendly server who brought me a lunch menu. I ordered a very refreshing hint o’ mint lemonade from Scottish drinks company ‘Summer House Drinks’ who are from my old neck of the woods up in Rosehearty in Aberdeenshire.

My lunch was simply delicious, just what I was after. A very high standard vegetarian option which can also be made vegan with vegan cheese and gluten free options are available. I opted for the sourdough veggie haggis, mango jam & cheese toastie with a welcome addition of a rocket pepper balsamic salad. I chose to add a half portion of soup of the day, spiced parsnip & coconut. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch, my only suggestion is removing lettuce in the toastie itself as it was a bit soggy. Admittedly it was hard to choose from the list of attractive toastie fillings from halloumi, red onion, tomato & sweet chilli mayo to chicken, chorizo, mozzarella & chipotle sauce, I was spoilt for choice!
A busy bustling little place, pretty interiors, attracting hipsters and families alike. Check it out next time you’re in they city.
