I’d organised an afternoon tea for my mum and I to enjoy. However sometimes the difficulty is finding a place that does afternoon tea for those who are coeliac. Luckily The Macdonald Houston House do cater for those who are gluten intolerant and I couldn’t wait to treat my mum.
The first photograph was my afternoon tea and the second was the one my mum had. She had a few quite different things to me which I was actually quite jealous about, including chutney and cheese! The only thing that didn’t look that appealing were her sandwiches, they weren’t cut into dainty finger sandwiches like mine.
The scones looked like they could’ve been a bit hard but were actually the perfect consistency with clotted cream and jam which is the perfect accompaniment to any scone!
My cakes were good but I honestly think my mum’s were better! I had a mini éclair and a mini orange macaron and 2 mousse citrus and strawberry cheesecake type cakes that weren’t really my type of cake but I’d brought a Tupperware takeaway box to take some cakes home for my step-dad!
My mum had mini chocolate brownies, lemon drizzle sponge, strawberry tart and tablet – delicious!
We had bottomless tea and we got to sit in the bar area which was nice and cosy. I’d heard they used to serve the afternoon tea in the reception area with the big glass windows and views of the grounds which would’ve been nice too.
I had a lovely afternoon with my mum at The Macdonald Houston House Hotel conveniently situated near Broxburn and Livingston, a short drive from my flat in west Edinburgh with a nice walk around the grounds afterwards. I recommend you check them out for afternoon tea too.
